SEO builds discoverability in search. AEO emphasizes useful answers within that broader foundation. Both depend on accessible content, accurate information, and relevance to the person asking.
Start with the customer’s task.
A person typing a short search and a person asking an AI assistant a detailed question may be trying to solve the same problem. Your website needs to explain the service, show credible expertise, and make the next step easy in either case.
| Focus | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question | Can the right audience find this page? | Does this content clearly answer the question? |
| Content structure | Useful pages organized by purpose | Direct answers supported by context and evidence |
| Technical foundation | Crawlable, indexable, usable pages | The same foundation remains relevant |
| Useful measures | Search visibility, relevant visits, qualified actions | Available referrals, answer visibility samples, qualified actions |
What to improve first
Review your most important service page. Can a new visitor immediately tell what you provide, who it is for, and what happens next? Does the page explain the important limitations or prerequisites? Is the content supported by your actual expertise? Those improvements serve both traditional searchers and people arriving from AI-assisted discovery.
What does not follow from AEO
A new label does not create a shortcut to authority. Repeating a question in many slightly different forms, adding unsupported claims, or publishing unnecessary machine-readable files does not replace useful information. Google’s guidance says that no special schema is required for its AI features and that eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.
A sensible workflow
- Fix access and indexing obstacles on the pages that matter.
- Gather customer questions from real conversations and service delivery.
- Write a direct, accurate answer and provide the supporting detail.
- Link to related services and sources so readers can verify and act.
- Review performance and maintain the information as it changes.
